The Lord Watches Over You (Psalm 121)

RSS
The last time I pondered this psalm in my devotional life (until this last week) was as I sat down next to my father and mother. It was the last time I visited my childhood home in Ohio, but it wasn’t a celebratory homecoming at all. The truth is I didn’t spend too much time at home. All three of us were at the hospital. My mother was unconscious lying in a bed, hooked up to a respirator. She had incurred bacterial pneumonia in both lungs that made her septic, all from an infection in her bloodstream. My mother and father needed to hear this psalm! I needed to hear it too!

That night I recalled to them how I was now beginning to understand just a little bit about parenthood (my daughter was just about one year old). I found out it means long nights sometimes. I now know it meant that sometimes your child might face physical challenges. I discovered that no matter how hard I tried, there always seems to be a bruised elbow, a skinned knee, or a broken leg. I realized that parents sometimes fail also. Bad things happen. Parents slumber and sleep, sometimes falling asleep on their watch over their children. Parents turn away from their child for a split second and possibly leave them in a dangerous situation.

This psalm, Psalm 121, sings a different tune to us. Our heavenly Father, the creator of heaven and earth helps us in the moments when our greatest fears and uncertainties in life are realized. When the fear of losing a loved one who is in a medically-induced coma storms upon you, “the LORD watches over you.” When the uncertainty of how your child develops physically with a disability in the future, “the LORD will watch over your coming and going.” When the sadness of a broken marriage relationship burns in the pit of your stomach and heart, “the LORD is your shade at your right hand.” God’s watchfulness over your life and your soul is perfect! It is in those moments when you are able to say, “My help comes from the LORD,…” We have his help, his solution to all fear and uncertainty-Christ Jesus is our Savior who comes in the name of the Lord (Matthew 21:9)! God’s blessings on your charge into battle with Jesus this Lent and Easter season!
