Matthew 24: “So You Also Must Be Ready…”

I got ready, did you? Did you get the necessary groceries? Get the batteries? Get the shovels? Get fuel for vehicles and blowers? I got the essentials for this storm we are experiencing, yet I’m still feeling unprepared as I sit here this morning looking out at six and eight foot tall snowdrifts immediately up against our house windows. Are you feeling overwhelmed yet?

Do you feel overwhelmed with all that Jesus says about the signs of the end of the age (Mt 24:1-28)? I know I do. It seems like all those are happening right here in our day. Indeed, they are! Forgive us, Lord, for our doubts of your care and compassion as we live in the End Time! But you and I as believers in Christ Jesus can take some comfort from this chapter. He says, “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened” (24:22). Jesus simply says to you and me, “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come” (24:42). Christ simply asks us to remain faithful and wise (not undedicated and foolish) to his ways, the way of the Lord (24:45-51). Psalm 1 reminds you and me how to be ready:

1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.

3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
