Relax and Let God Prepare Your Christmas

the big idea:
What a crazy busy time of the year! We expend so much energy getting everything ready that, by the time Christmas arrives, we’re completely spent. Instead of a heart that is really and truly prepared to celebrate the greatest gift this world has ever received, we can’t wait for it all to be over. The truth is, all our outward traditions and trapping of Christmas cannot even begin to prepare us for the celebration of this miracle like God can. So come to worship, sit back and relax and let God do your Christmas prep.
the breakdown:
December 6: Preparing Your Heart
God sent John the Baptist to prepare the way for the Lord. His unenviable work was to give the people of Jesus’ day a good swift slap across the face to wake them up to the depravity of their hearts and the hypocrisy of their lives. What are the sins in your life and mine that need to be acknowleged and confessed so that we can see our need for Christ and fall in love again with the comforting message of his forgiveness?
Scriptures:
Malachi 3:1-4; 1 Corinthians 4:1-5; Luke 3:1-6; Psalm 24
Sermon Text:
Luke 3:1-6
December 13: Changing Your Life
Nehemiah was a John the Baptist of his day, opening the eyes of God’s people to the truth of how far they had strayed from God’s Word and commands. But the message of God’s love and grace dried their tears and filled their hearts with a desire to live lives of joyful celebration. God’s grace changes our hearts and our lives. How is God’s grace changing you at this very moment?
Scriptures:
Nehemiah 8:9-18; Philippians 4:4-7; Luke 3:7-18; Psalm 14
Sermon Text:
Nehemiah 8:9-18
December 20: Choosing the Gifts
It’s tough choosing Christmas gifts. Do they need it? Will they like it? Cain and Abel brought gifts to God. One was acceptable because it came from a heart of faith. The other was rejected because it came from a heart that had rejected God. The resulting envy and jealously and its vicious fruit display the darkness and depravity of our hearts. But God chooses the perfect gift, just the one a sinful world needs.
Scriptures:
Genesis 4:1,2,6-8,25—5:5; Revelation 12:1-6; Luke 1:39-55; Psalm 85

Genesis 4:1,2,6-8,25—5:5
December 27: Special Christmas Service: The Seven C's of Christmas
Has Christmas become so cliché that the familiarity of Christmas breeds contempt? Replace the clichés with the true meaning of Christmas and use the “Seven C’s of Christmas” to consider what it means to truly worship Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
