the big idea:
If we're going to be honest, Christian witnessing is not the most popular topic—inside or outside the church. Those outside the church are skeptical at best thinking that the church is just trying “to sell” Jesus to fill their pews, their coffers and their volunteer lists, that our only interest is the preservation of an outdated institution. Those inside the church struggle with fears: Will there be questions I won’t be able to answer? Will I be labeled a "Jesus freak"? We feel that people don’t really want what Christ has to offer…like we’re spreading some infectious disease rather than truly good news. As we continue our Epiphany celebration, our worship will help us to look at our Christian witness in a new light, through the eyes people who have been there and done that.
the breakdown:
January 24: Through God’s Power
It took some guts for Peter and John to do what they did—to stand up to the religious leaders of the day and literally put their lives on the line to share the message of Christ. But, as they themselves say, they had to talk. Jesus’ teaching, life, death and resurrection had changed their lives forever. And now they suddenly found a new power working in them, a power not their own, but the power of the Holy Spirit. That power is also at work in you. Use it!
Scriptures:
Nehemiah 8:1-3;5,6,8-10; Acts 4:23-31; Luke 4:14-21; Psalm 19

Acts 4:23-31
January 31: Expecting Rejection
One of the fears that keeps us from witnessing is the fear of ridicule and rejection. Today we’re reminded that Jesus was rejected—in his own hometown. He shows us that it’s par for the course. The sinful mind is hostile to God. We can expect some strong reactions when we share the message of God’s law and gospel. But with the eternity of a redeemed soul hanging in the balance, it’s well worth the risk of a little personal discomfort, isn’t it?
Scriptures:
1 Kings 17:7-16; Romans 10:18—11:6; Luke 4:20-32; Psalm 78

Luke 4:20-32
February 7: Whoever You Are
Sometimes we comfort our conscience this way: There’s so many people out there better trained, better suited to talk with other people about Jesus. That may be true. But the fact is God has chosen you. The first disciples were fishermen, tax collectors, and even a religious wingnut. They were not the movers and shakers in the world of that day. But God used them to change the course of the world like never before. Now it’s your turn.
Scriptures:
Judges 13:6-24; Romans 10:13-17; Luke 5:1-11; Psalm 85

Luke 5:1-11
