Victory Sermon Series: No Perfect People Allowed

the big idea:

"They don't want me in that church. I’m too sinful." Have you ever heard someone express this kind of sentiment? We know that it’s completely wrong, that it goes contrary to everything Jesus taught. And yet, how easily God's people in the church can give the impression that church is only for those who live by certain standards, that the church is for people who have their lives all together.

Didn’t Jesus chastise the Pharisees for their condescending attitude toward those who didn't live up to their standards? Didn't Jesus tell them that he came not for the healthy, but for the sick? The frightening reality is that the temptation to become modern day Pharisees carries a more powerful lure than we realize. In this series, we will confront our pharisaical tendencies, rejoice in our own forgiveness, and seek the help of the Holy Spirit to look at the people around us through Jesus' eyes of compassion and mercy so that our church becomes an even greater haven for sinners.

the breakdown:

What does God expect of me before he’s ready to welcome me into a relationship with him? The question comes at it all backwards. There is nothing that I can do to make myself worthy. It’s impossible. The good news is the God doesn’t expect anything of us. He makes the unworthy worthy.

"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." No one understands that better than the followers of Christ. In the Bible we see even the heroes of the faith fall into very grievous sins. The more we grow in our understanding of God’s will, the more we see the depth of our own sinfulness and rejoice to carry the name of Jesus.
Scriptures: Genesis 12:10-20; 2 Samuel 11:1-9,14-17; Romans 8:14-25; John 18:15-18,25-27

Even though we carry around, as Paul says, "this body of death", this seemingly inescapable inclination to sin, we hate this part of ourselves. We want to change. We want to be different. God’s encouragement to us today is that his Spirit is continually working to renew our minds and free us from our bondage to sin.
Scriptures: Genesis 12:1-6; Romans 6:1-10; Romans 8:5-11; Romans 12:1-2; Galatians 5:16-26; Luke 19:1-10; John 21:15-19

As people who understand that in us the Lord has made the unworthy worthy, as people who recognize more and more every day the depth of our weakness and sin, as people who have experienced the renewing and liberating work of the Spirit, we are the people God has chosen to patiently and lovingly reach out to others no matter where they are on their personal spiritual journey and walk with them as they move to next level.
Scriptures: Galatians 6:1-5; Ephesians 3:14-19; Ephesians 4:1-13; Romans 12:3-8; Matthew 9:35-38; John 17:20-24
