Victory Sermon Series: Parables That Go Against The Flow

DIRECTIONS to Victory of the Lamb Sunday Morning Worship.

the big idea:

Jesus often taught in parables—earthly stories with heavenly meanings. What we don’t realize is that with many of these parables Jesus was attempting to get at and change the common religious misconceptions of the day. What many people in the church believed or how they lived was not in accord with God’s Word and will. So Jesus told a story that was meant to expose their sin and call them to repentance.

It’s interesting to see how little things really change. The church today struggles with the same kinds of issues the church wrestled with in Jesus’ day. With this series we’ll take a look at three parables that Jesus shared and apply them to the church and to our personal lives today.

the breakdown:

Image October 9: The Parable of the Two Sons

It’s hard to swallow Jesus’ teaching that some who have been in the church all their lives are spiritually lost. They themselves need a change of heart which leads to a change of life. They just don’t know it. Even more difficult to accept is that many whom religious people look down upon because of their past way of life are really God’s true children..
Scriptures: Jonah 1:1-17; 2 Corinthians 13:5-8; Matthew 21:28-32; Psalm 25
Sermon Text: Matthew 21:28-32

ImageOctober 16: The Parable of the Lost Sheep

Jesus states that he would gladly leave the ninety-nine behind to rescue that one lost sheep. Do we in the church share Jesus’ passion for the lost? Are we willing to sacrifice some of our own comfort and care for the sake of the lost? What does this parable mean for our personal and our church’s priorities?
Scriptures: Jonah 3:1-10; 2 Peter 3:8-13; Matthew 18:10-14; Psalm 89
Sermon Text: Matthew 18:10-14

ImageOctober 23: The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard

In God’s kingdom “the reward” is the same for all, whether you come early or late, work all your life or just sneak in at the end. The perplexing question is why we struggle so much when it comes to the incredible generosity of God’s grace.
Scriptures: Jonah 4:5-11; Romans 9:6b-16; Matthew 20:1-16; Psalm 27
Sermon Text: Matthew 20:1-16
