Victory Sermon Series: No Fear$

the big idea:

Fear seems to be the name of the game when it comes to anything financial nowadays. The market takes yet another dive as analysts speak of fears of a possible double dip recession. People who have lost their jobs are wondering how long it’ll be yet before they’re back to work—and how are they going to keep afloat in the meantime. Those who haven’t lost their jobs are wondering if they’re going to be able to weather the recession. Even in good economic times we have our fears. Will we have enough for retirement? What if some disaster strikes? How will we get our kids through college? Wouldn’t it be nice if we could live with no fears when it came to money and our finances? The good news is: it’s not some pie in the sky dream (like I’ve got to have a couple million before that’s going to happen!). God gives us a much more sane and relaxed view of our finances—no matter what we have or don’t have.

the breakdown:

One of the big fears when it comes to our finances is that we won’t have enough. But we forget that the God who loves us and calls us his children owns it all. And as we look back at how he has taken care of his people throughout the centuries we see that he not only gives his people the bare necessities of life, but that he is generous beyond belief.
Scriptures: Genesis 14:8-24; 1 Timothy 6:6-16; Luke 16:1-13; Psalm 38
Sermon Text: Genesis 14:8-24

October 17: Because I Can Live With Less
Another big fear is that I won’t be content, that I won’t be able to have the things I want to have, to do the things I want to do. This is one of the great dangers of rooting our hope and trust in money. It cannot truly satisfy and so there’s never enough. Putting my hope for happiness in my money will only make me a grump. God helps us reprioritize our lives so that our hearts long for those things that are truly satisfying.
Scriptures: Ecclesiastes 5:8-20; Revelation 2: 8-11; Luke 16:19-31; Psalm 146
Sermon Text: Ecclesiastes 5:8-20

Another big fear is that we’ll be made to look like a chump, that when we do try to be generous and help others, they’ll somehow take advantage of us and make us look like a fool. But God helps us see that what finally comes of our generosity is not nearly as important as what moves us to be generous. We, the givers, are the ones who are blessed the most through our giving.
Scriptures: 1 Chronicles 29:1,2, 10-18; Romans 6:15-23; Luke 17:1-10; Psalm 27
Sermon Text: 1 Chronicles 29:1-18
