Victory Sermon Series: Lord, Give Me a Heart After Your Own: Lessons from the Life of David

the big idea:
David knew the joy of success. David knew the bitterness of failure. But most importantly, David knew the LORD—his powerful, kind, righteous, merciful and loving God. It’s incredible the lessons we can learn from the life of this man whom God calls “a man after my own heart.” As we make this journey through David’s life, it will be our prayer that God make us men and woman after his own heart.
the breakdown:
August 1: Chosen and Prepared
God chose David to be a leader for his people not because of what he looked like on the outside, but because of what God saw in his heart—a heart that would not turn away from or reject the working of his Holy Spirit. Once chosen, God placed an extra measure of his Holy Spirit on David, to teach and guide him, so that David’s heart would truly become a heart after God’s own heart.
Scriptures:
1 Samuel 16:1-13; 1 Peter 2:9-12; Luke 5:1-11
Sermon Text:
1 Samuel 16
August 8: A Man Who Trusts that the Battle Is the Lord’s
God gave David a heart that understood that nothing was impossible with God. No enemy, no matter how insurmountable the odds may seem, could possibly stand against God or against the one he has chosen to bless. Armed with this confidence, David bravely steps forward to bring down a giant. God give us such a faith as this especially when our spiritual enemies are looming large in our lives.
Scriptures:
1 Samuel 17:32-37;41-51; Ephesians 6:10-18; Matthew 4:1-11
Sermon Text:
1 Samuel 17
August 15: A Man Who Protects His Enemy
One of Jesus’ most difficult teachings is the command to do good to those who hate and try to harm us. David was being hunted down by a man mad with jealousy. David had done nothing to deserve this kind of treatment. He had every right to retaliate in kind when given the chance. But when the opportune moment came, David did not let his desire for vengeance win him over. God give us that kind of a heart.
Scriptures:
1 Samuel 24:1-12; Romans 12:20-21; Matthew 5:38-48
Sermon Text:
1 Samuel 24
August 29: A Man Who Fails and Is Forgiven
The higher they are the farther they fall. How true this was for David. He was a man who had it all— God had blessed him so richly. But it wasn’t enough. David allowed himself to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and gave temptation a foothold. From there one sin led to another until this spiritual leader of God’s people found himself languishing away under the burden of his horrific guilt. But there is forgiveness—even for David.
Scriptures:
2 Samuel 12:1-13; 1 Timothy 1:12-16; Luke 22:31-34
Sermon Text:
2 Samuel 11,12
September 5: A Man Who Worships His God
David is well known for the many psalms he wrote. David was a man who worshiped his God. Not only did David feel that regular heartfelt worship was an important part of his life as a believer, but he also felt that worship should utilize the best of our talents and resources.
Scriptures:
2 Samuel 6:12-19; Colossian 3:12-17; Luke 19:37-40
Sermon Text:
2 Samuel 6
