Victory Sermon Series: Good News!

the big idea:

Are you afraid to turn on the news? “The markets took another sharp downturn today.” “A bomb exploded early this morning in the middle of…” “More devastating wildfires…” “Two residents on the northeast side shot and killed…” The sheer amount of bad news in the world is oppressive. And unfortunately not even the world’s celebration of Christmas this year will be able to bring a stop to all the bad news. But that’s what makes the good news of Christmas all the more glorious. As dark and depressing as the world is, we have a message of peace and hope that brings light even to the darkest night.

November 30 (Advent 1): Good News for the Exile

Are you an exile? Are you alienated from family because of something you’ve done? Do you feel alienated from God because your actions have made it impossible to be accepted by him? Are you alienated even from yourself because of your own feelings of guilt and worthlessness? THE GOOD NEWS! Your exile is about to come to an end.

December 7 (Advent 2): Good News for Those Whose Glory Is Fading
The immensity of what’s wrong with this world and with our lives takes the wind out of our sails. “What could I possibly do to make things better?” Even the best we have to offer is not going to be good enough. THE GOOD NEWS? You’re not the answer. Get out of the way and let God through. He’s coming to the rescue and nothing can stop him.

December 14 (Advent 3): Good News for Battered Sheep
All of us, at times, find ourselves in places we don’t want to be. “Why did I say that?” “Why did I do that?” “Why am I here?” When we get in a place like that, we may feel that there’s no turning back. There’s a sense of hopelessness. THE GOOD NEWS? No matter how battered we are, there’s always hope—because the Lord has already come looking for us.

December 21 (Advent 4): Good News for the Weary
There’s an interesting spiritual paradox found among God’s people. The burdens and struggles of life sap our strength. Over time we begin to grow old and feeble and frail. THE GOOD NEWS? Those very same circumstances also drive us deeper into God’s Word. So outwardly we grow weaker, but inwardly we God makes us stronger and stronger.
