the big idea:

We have great respect for people who have a dogged determination, who set their minds to accomplish something great and won’t allow anyone or anything get in their way. Yet, even the most unwavering grit and fortitude we see depicted in the heroes on the movie screen pales in comparison to the resolve God has to love us and rescue us from our sin. We see this resolve in the manger on Christmas Eve, as the Creator of heaven and earth, determined to free this world from its slavery to sin, takes on human flesh and blood and enters the world he created. Yet, Satan was also determined—to counter God’s plan in any and every way possible. And it’s in this all out battle of the wills that we clearly see who truly is the greatest. In the end, absolutely nothing is going to be able to stop God’s love.

the breakdown:

December 19: A Miraculous Sign for the Unbelieving Heart

One of the last places one would expect opposition to God’s rescue plan is the very hearts of those Jesus came to save. Yet, John says, “though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him” (John 1:10- 11). King Ahaz did not want to believe that God could rescue Israel from her enemies. So God gave him a sign—a virgin will be with child…and he will be called Immanuel. Through the centuries this sign has conquered millions of unbelieving hearts. How about yours?
Scriptures: Isaiah 7:1-14(15-17); Romans 1:1-7; Matthew 1:18-25; Psalm 24
Sermon Text: Isaiah 7:1-14(15-17)

“The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One” (Psalm 2:2). Satan controls the hearts of many people. He pulled Herod’s strings hoping to kill Jesus already as a child. But God was a couple of steps ahead. Satan still pulls the strings of many people, especially those who wield power and authority in our world, as he rails against God’s church and his people. Yet our great comfort is found in Jesus promise: not even the gates of hell can prevail against his church.
Scriptures: Hosea 11:1-7; Galatians 4:4-7; Matthew 2:13-15,19-23; Psalm 2
Sermon Text: Matthew 2:13-23

The final Sunday in our “God’s Love—Unstoppable” series takes a look at the dogged determination of God from a little different angle. The Scripture shares a mysterious yet awesome teaching called “predestination.” It’s the fact that God chose us to be his own before the foundations of the world were laid. All of history, then, becomes “his story” as he works everything out with this one thing in mind— that I should be his own forever.
Scriptures: Genesis 16:1-16; Ephesians 1:3-14; John 1:14-18; Psalm 148
Sermon Text: Ephesians 1:3-14
