the big idea:

Living in the year 2010 in the good old US of A, we have a hard time imaging what it must have been like to be slave; being owned by someone else, having your life controlled, not being able to do the things we want to do when you want to do them. But are we as free as we really think we are? We live in a society where addiction and depression are epidemic. We are constantly trying to escape the pain in our lives only to find ourselves more enslaved than we were before. There are a lot of negative emotions that take us captive. But four of the “biggies” are guilt, fear of condemnation, sadness and worry. Imagine a life free from the power of these ugly slave drivers. Wouldn’t it be great! We don’t have to imagine too hard for too long because in this upcoming End Times series, God is going to give us a clear picture of world where all our struggles come to an end. A world in which we are finally free!

the breakdown:

ImageOctober 31: From Guilt

What kind of “guilts” enslave you? Not giving the people you love the time and attention you feel they deserve? Are your past mistakes still haunting you? Are you chained to a sin you cannot seem to escape from? Does it seem that no matter how hard you try you’re just not living up to your own or to someone else’s expectations. Whatever your guilt—in Christ you are finally free!
Scriptures: Jeremiah 31:31-34; Romans 3:19-28; John 8:31-36; Psalm 46
Sermon Text: Romans 3:19-28

ImageNovember 7: From Condemnation

So what happens after I die? Do I need to be afraid? What happens when this world comes to an end? Should I freak out? Although some of us deal with these questions (which can be rather frightening) by simply putting them out of our minds, sooner or later they catch up with us. Rather than fear what might happen, isn’t it better to find out the truth? For when it comes to these questions, the Truth will finally set us free.
Scriptures: Ezekiel 9:1-11; 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10; Luke 19:11-27; Psalm 90
Sermon Text: Ezekiel 9:1-11

ImageNovember 14: From Sadness

There is so much sadness in the world: little babies being born with debilitating birth defects, young children losing their parents to some freak accident, innocent people are the victims of horrendous crimes, the nicest people come down with crippling and horribly painful diseases. The bad news never seems to end. But it will. And when it does, God will wipe every tear from our eyes.
Scriptures: Isaiah 65:17-25; Revelation 22:1-5; Luke 20:27-38; Psalm 150
Sermon Text: Isaiah 65:17-25

ImageNovember 21: From Worry

Natural disasters are on the rise around the world. The economy continues to teeter on the brink of recession. The terrorism threat remains high. A higher percentage of people every year are being diagnosed with cancer and other deadly diseases. People are saying that the signs of the end are near. What’s there to worry about? Nothing! Jesus is in absolute control.
Scriptures: Genesis 49:8-12; Colossians 1:13-20; Luke 23:35-43; Psalm 98
Sermon Text: Colossians 1:13-20
