Victory Sermon Series: Defining Moments in Our Faith Life

the big idea:

As you look back over your life, do you have any defining moments? Unusual things that happened, achievements made, crises you lived through, that set or changed the course of your life? We understand that nothing just happens. God uses our defining moments in life to refine our faith.

The season of Advent adds cause for urgency to God’s refining process. Jesus is coming back. Will we be ready? Our Old Testament lessons this Advent season share powerful defining moments in the faith lives of three individuals. Although the details differ in our lives, God still uses the same types of experiences to shape and mold our faith. And, though the experience may not be the most pleasant at the time, God is making sure we’re prepared for that day when we stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

When God asked Noah to build a huge boat hundreds of miles from the nearest body of water, you think Noah would have said, “You’ve got to be kidding me! What are my friends and neighbors going to think?” The crazy things that God asks us to do today may not be on the same scale, yet even the small sacrifices we make for Jesus (i.e. setting aside time to worship every week, our financial support of the work of the church, not plunging with the world into the same flood of dissipation) define our faith in powerful ways.
Scriptures: Genesis 6:9-22;7:11-23; Romans 13:11-14; Matthew 24:36-44; Psalm 18

“I’m sorry.” These are two very simple words. Yet, to acknowledge we’re wrong can be one of the most difficult things in the world for us to do. King Nebuchadnezzar bragged up his capital city of Babylon, boasting that it was built “by my might and power and for the glory of my majesty.” God helped him see reality a little more clearly. There are times in life when God needs to do the same for us because hard and boastful hearts can’t see what they need to see most of all…our desperate need for a Savior.
Scriptures: Daniel 4:19-37; Acts 3:19-26; Matthew 3:1-12; Psalm 14
Sermon Text: Daniel 4:19-37

Many find Job’s story distressing. How can God bring so much heartache into the life of someone he loves. Job himself had his questioning moments. But finally Job came back to this: the evidence of God’s wisdom, love and grace cannot be denied. If I cannot understand God’s ways, it’s my problem and not his. We live by faith, not by sight. And it’s at the most difficult times in life that we learn what it truly means to live by faith.
Scriptures: Job 1:1-22; James 5:7-11; Matthew 11:2-11; Psalm 146
Sermon Text: Job 1:1-22
